Postdoctoral Affairs

This page is currently under revision to reflect the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) reached on October 8, 2025, between Brown University and the Brown Postdoc Labor Organization. At this time, postdoctoral appointees should refer directly to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for the most up-to-date information regarding compensation, benefits, and other employment-related information.

Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) — A PDF is in residence to conduct research supported by external fellowships run through the University; these fellowships typically provide stipends. Most Postdoctoral Fellows are not Brown employees, but they may participate in a University health and dental plan. If the fellowship does not fully meet Brown’s pay minimums and/or expected institutional contribution to health and dental insurance, the appointing office must make sure that an appropriate source has been identified to supplement the fellowship. PDFs are union-eligible. Details on benefits and policies concerning postdoctoral fellows can be found here.
