Postdoctoral Affairs

In addition to vacation and sick time, the following types of Paid Time Off are available to Postdoctoral Research Associates. Please note the following provision for Postdoctoral Fellows and Postdoctoral Research Fellows per the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Article 18, Section A):

"In the event that the source of external funding for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Postdoctoral Fellow specifies leave provisions that differ from those stated above, the leave provisions of the funding source shall apply. The external source of funding will continue to be responsible for covering compensation during the leave. Notifications and approval requirements of the external funding agency must be followed.”

Special Time Off for Conferences or Professional Development Events

Approved travel days to conferences or other professional development events will not count toward permitted days off or vacation time.

Jury Duty

Bargaining unit members may request time off for jury duty. An employee who serves will continue to receive regular pay and benefits throughout the service. Employees are expected to report to work at any time during the day when jury duty is not required.

Bereavement Leave

Bargaining unit members may request up to three working days (22.5 hours) of paid leave following the death of a parent or stepparent, child or stepchild, son- or daughter-in-law, spouse or domestic partner, grandchild, grandparent, grandparent-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, or sibling. These relationships include those of a spouse or domestic partner.

Up to one additional working day (7.5 hours) of paid leave may be used to attend a funeral or memorial service. If international travel is required due to logistical difficulty, the bargaining unit member may take up to five working days off.

Military Reserve Duty or Training

United States military reservists or members of the National Guard may be away from their position at Brown for up to ten working days (two weeks) per calendar year to assist with a national, state, or local emergency or to fulfill military training obligations.

Employees must return to work on the first scheduled workday following completion of their duty, allowing for reasonable travel and rest time.

During military reserve duty, employees continue to receive full pay and benefits. Any compensation received for military duty—excluding payments for room and board—must be remitted to Brown University.
